Frequently Asked Questions

In the US, the standard restaurant tip is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill for good service. 10% is acceptable for poor service; 20–25% is typical for excellent service. Tipping norms vary by country — in many European countries, rounding up or leaving 5–10% is customary.

The most commonly expected tip percentages are: 15% for adequate service, 18% for good service, and 20% for excellent service. Many people use 20% as a default because the maths is easy to calculate mentally.

Find 10% of the bill by moving the decimal one place left (e.g. $85 → $8.50). Then double it to get 20% ($8.50 × 2 = $17.00). Add the tip to the bill to get the total: $85 + $17 = $102.

Enter the bill amount, select the tip percentage, then set the number of people using this tool. The calculator divides the total (bill + tip) equally and shows each person's share. You can also choose to split just the tip while the host pays the base bill.

Tipping before tax is technically correct — you are tipping on the service, not the tax. However, many people tip on the total bill including tax for simplicity. The difference is usually small: on a $80 pre-tax bill with 10% tax, the difference between tipping pre-tax and post-tax at 20% is $1.60.
